Password Manager

20. 3. 2025

Not using a password manager yet? In this article you will learn why it is important, which one to choose and how to start using it.

Password Manager

A password manager is an application that helps users store and organize passwords. This means users do not need to remember or write them down. At the same time, a password manager allows them to use a different password for each of their accounts.

Why a Password Manager?

  • Password Problem

Most people can remember at most 10 different passwords. However, we have many more accounts, so we use the same or similar passwords. This makes it easier for attackers and puts us at risk.

  • Solution – Password Manager

A password manager stores and encrypts your login credentials. You only need to remember one strong password that protects all your accounts. Additionally, it allows you to generate secure passwords and automatically fill them in when logging in.

  • Security and Convenience

A password manager is key to secure use of digital technologies. It protects your accounts and simplifies your life by making password management easier.

Password Manager vs. Browser Password Storage

  • Saving passwords in browsers (such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox) should not be confused with using a password manager.

  • Managing passwords is not a browser's primary function! For this reason, it is more suitable and secure to choose a tool dedicated to storing and managing passwords, ensuring your passwords are sufficiently protected.

Which Password Manager to Choose?

There are many password management solutions on the market. Along with this comes the threat of low-quality password managers, which may be too expensive or complex to use.

The security team at MUNI has prepared a guide for activating and setting up two password managers that are user-friendly and valid from a security standpoint.

  • Bitwarden

Bitwarden is a free open-source password manager with a high level of security. It protects user data through AES 256-bit encryption, zero-knowledge proof (meaning the company does not have access to your passwords), and extensive 2FA options.

Bitwarden also offers advanced features such as local data storage, password security checks, and data breach monitoring.
